The Advanced Materials & Surfaces group (AMS) was formally
created in February 2004 with the arrival of Professor Martyn Pemble. Prof.
Pemble moved to UCC from the University of Salford, UK, where he held the
post of Chair of Physical Chemistry. Professor Pembles’ move to UCC was facilitated
via a substantial award made to him by Science Foundation Ireland,
which has allowed him to establish the AMS group in the Tyndall National
Institute.
Our work is essentially divided into two main parts;
- the first of these
deals with the growth and modification of novel thin film systems and
surface structures by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) metal organic
CVD (MOCVD), metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and, most
recently, atomic layer deposition (ALD). Learn more here....
- The second area of
interest deals with the synthesis of novel particles and their
self-assembly into photonic band gap materials, that are similar in
structure to natural opals. Learn
more here...
In 2006 we started a network for CVD related research in Ireland.
