The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Application Engineer – Wireless Sensor Networks

The Tyndall National Institute, at University College, Cork is a world leader in the development of smart sensor systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. As a result of funding secured as part of an industry aligned research project as part of the DTIF (Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund) project GUARD in conjunction with significant commercial and government investment, the Wireless Sensor Network Group, Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for an appointment as an Application Engineer to implement research-focused platforms in the area of embedded systems for next generation Wireless technologies and sensing systems for deployment in drone based

Reporting to the WSN Head of Group or his nominee, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement applied research projects in a variety of fast-moving, industrially relevant areas.  Working with the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Head of Group and industry applied research team, the successful candidate will be part of a team of multi-disciplinary industry aligned researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low-power system hardware and software design to execute industry defined applied research projects. The team comprises of engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications.

Activities will include applied research implementation, electronic design, hardware/software co-design of embedded systems, and travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings, to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading industry-focused applied research group developing high TRL research prototypes.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work under the direction of the Principal Investigator/Project/Team Leader in the implmentation of an embedded wireless smart sensing system with integrated communications sensors and associated data fusion algorithims.
  • Work with Tyndall’s industry/research partners (existing and planned) to identify their wireless sensing needs with respect to sensorised embedded systems (technologies and applications).
  • The candidate will be required to undertake the system specification, design and deployment of wireless sensing systems (for monitoring the environment) under the guidance and supervision of senior researchers
  • To provide assistance in planning, organizing, appropriate demonstrators, and communicating Tyndalls research studies as part of the groups outreach programs
  • To help develop the design practice standardization within the WSN group.
  • To support the transfer of knowledge and design practices to newly appointed staff and students
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To engage in Education and Outreach (EPE) activities to showcase the research activities of the WSN group and the Vista milk SFI center
  • To carry out administrative work to support the program of research and help ensure all relevant project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • To perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree (ideally Postgraduate to Masters level) Qualified with typically 1+ years relevant post-graduate engineering experience in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline
  • Has a thorough understanding of electronic engineering design and implementation of embedded systems at a high TRL
  • Proven Experience in circuit design for complex multi- layer embedded systems (Altium/PADS/Mentor Graphics etc.)
  • Proven Experience in  PCB design for complex multi- layer embedded systems
  • Proven firmware development for complex systems including sensor interfacing and communications and data analytics
  • Experience with relevant lab test-equipment
  • A demonstrated capability in the delivery of applied research projects for embedded systems
  • Proven participation in Team projects with multi-disciplinary team members

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with the development of sensors interfaces for a variety of wireless technologies and sensors using STM 32 architectures.
  • Good analytical skills and computer skills for algorithm development and integration in to embedded systems.
  • Proven capabilities in Embedded Linux (e.g. Raspberry Pi) programming
  • An ability to work independently to a tight schedule
  • Proven organizational, Project Management, Time Management and communication skills
  • High levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation are encouraged
  • Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results
  • Proven experience in Industrial/Mechanical design using solidworks or another relevant CAD design package

This position may be appointed on SEA Grade 4 salary scale €35,682 -€50,534 pa. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
