Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in life sciences that include medtech, biopharma and agritech.

Tyndall’s ICT for Health Strategic Programme is driving an ABC ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business and Clinical stakeholders) in which Tyndall researchers are working with academic leaders, many of the top companies in medtech and pharma industries, and with clinical experts. As a result, Tyndall hosts researchers in residence from leading healthtech companies such as Integer and Johnson and Johnson, and the ICT for Health Strategic Programme in Tyndall now represents approximately one third of the research activity across the institute. This reflects the growing opportunity for Tyndall to leverage our core strengths in human capital, global networks and world-class infrastructure to develop the next generation of intelligent medical devices and systems.

A key focus is on the development of ‘Transdermal Interface Platforms’ that will merge skin interface components with micro actuators, embedded sensors, wireless communications, control electronics and user interface software to create the next generation of smart drug delivery systems.

Tyndall plays a key role in the European Ecsel-funded project ‘Moore4Medical’, where we are working with a range of industrial and research-focussed partners from around Europe, and we now seek a highly motivated postgraduate or postdoctoral researcher to join our team in this exciting and rapidly expanding R&D field. You will work with our Irish and European colleagues to develop novel drug delivery platforms, for use with both liquid and lyophilised formulations. An experimental framework within which to assess performance and delivery efficacy will also be established. Regular European travel and interaction with international partners is expected.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will work in a team environment to:

  • Review the state-of-the-art in emerging drug delivery systems on an ongoing basis, and prepare review articles based on the findings;
  • Develop novel drug delivery strategies based on current and emerging microelectronic technologies;
  • Work with project partners to construct innovative devices based around patch- and pen-type form factors;
  • Prepare any risk assessments and safety documentation required for experimental activities;
  • Optimise prototype performance in a laboratory setting using ex-vivo tissue samples and tissue substitutes;
  • Publish high-quality articles in high-impact journals;
  • Identify opportunities for patent protection;
  • Report results to team leaders, partners, and funding agencies;
  • Contribute to future grant-writing activities in this area;
  • Comply with all relevant regulatory legislation, ethical considerations and safety regulations.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in a relevant discipline such as biomedical engineering, microsystems technology, physics);
  • Research experience in areas such as biomedical engineering, transdermal drug delivery, microfluidics, or wearable technologies;
  • Embedded systems hardware/software design and characterization skills;
  • Strong track record in dissemination such as scientific paper writing, conference presentation and report writing;
  • Excellent organisational, project management and communication skills;
  • Laboratory experience and an ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Demonstrable track record in rapid prototyping involving building blocks such as micropumps, sensor technologies, microfluidics, embedded systems, microcontrollers or wireless interfaces;
  • Track record in high-impact scientific publishing;
  • CAD and/or modelling experience;
  • Experience in design thinking or regulatory considerations for medical devices;
  • Previous work with microneedles or microfluidics, micropumps, microscopy tools, and skin or skin substitutes.

Skills and Experience

Reporting to the team leader of the research activity, the candidate will take a hands-on role, and will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of the technical research tasks outlined above. Scientific dissemination (preparation of regular internal and external reports, journal and conference publications, and industrial liaison) is an essential part of the position. Regular international travel will be required several times per year.

It is critical that the candidate has an ability to work in a team environment, as he/she will liaise closely with other team members (based in Germany, Spain, Netherlands and Ireland) engaged in developing complementary aspects of the platform. The successful candidate should be highly motivated with excellent organizational and communications skills, demonstrate an understanding of the research environment, and have the ability to communicate his/her research and the potential to manage a research project.

In return, the position provides the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for medical technology challenges, as well as to gain valuable experience in design, fabrication and testing of next-generation devices and systems. The successful candidate will experience the excitement of working a large research consortium on emerging technologies in a world-class research environment, and will have the opportunity to build the career profile associated with presentation at international conferences, workshops and industry meetings, and publication of the research in high impact journals.

The duration of the project is 18 months in the first instance, but is likely to be extended pending funding and the impact of the candidate.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers €39,130- 46,442 pa.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
