As the national institute for micro/nanoelectronics and photonics, and a research flagship of University College Cork, Tyndall employs over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff, with a cohort of 130 full-time graduate students. Together, we generate over 300 peer-reviewed publications annually and, with a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide, we are focused on delivering real impact from our excellent research.

Tyndall is home to a high-tech national research infrastructure unique in Ireland and is a national research asset. Hosting the only full CMOS, MEMS and III-V Wafer Semiconductor fabrication facilities and services in Ireland, Tyndall is capable of creating opportunities and prototyping new products for its target industries.

The MEMS Group at Tyndall invites applications for an exciting position as Senior Researcher to drive Tyndall’s MEMS components and smart systems (MEMSYS) technology development programme under the Europractice NEXTS project. Within NEXTS, Tyndall will establish new MEMS device processes, wafer-level MEMS packaging, stand-alone back-end MEMS packaging services, system integration and co-design of MEMS-based smart systems. Example of technologies targeted by this development are: piezoelectric MEMS, micromagnetics-on-silicon, and micro and nano electrodes, among others. With this in mind, Tyndall aims at forming links with international partners, to manage MEMS training activities, and to promote NEXTS MEMS services throughout Europe. Users of these MEMS services and training activities will come from both academic and industrial backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive Tyndall’s MEMS components and systems strategic roadmap development;
  • Support and promote the MEMSYS portfolio of technologies, applications, and develop a service offering to users;
  • Establish links with international providers of MEMS devices and systems;
  • Grow the number of users accessing the Europractice MEMS component and systems services;
  • Proactively contribute user-informed inputs to Tyndall’s MEMS teams for technology development programmes;
  • Benchmark Tyndall’s and other existing MEMS offerings in the market;
  • Target wafer-scale and chip-level packaging technologies that compliment Tyndall’s MEMS platforms;
  • Develop and present training programs for users of NEXTS’ MEMSYS services;
  • Report activities to the MEMS Head of Group on a regular basis, supporting the MEMS Head of Group to build and sustain Tyndall’s long-term strategic plan for MEMS in line with global MEMS Development roadmaps;
  • Report activities to, and coordinate, with the Europractice Programme Manager and the Head of EU Programmes to support building a coherent service for photonic, electronic and MEMs devices and systems and ensure the sustainability of MEMS devices and systems in the Europractice programme.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • MSc degree in MEMS, smart system integration, or relevant topic, with typically 5+ years of post-degree experience in a R&D organization (academia or industry);
  • Hands-on experience and know-how in MEMS device processing and fabrication;
  • Successful experience of prototyping or NPI (New Product Introduction) of a smart system integration application involving at least one MEMS component technology;
  • Technical project management experience.

Desirable Criteria

  • PhD in MEMS, smart system integration, or relevant topic, typically 2+ years of post-doctoral experience;
  • Hands-on experience and know-how in MEMS devices and systems in one or more of the following areas: design, test and characterization, packaging, systems integration.
  • Experience in micromagnetics-on-silicon, micro/nano-electrodes, and/or piezoelectric MEMS will also be considered;
  • Hands-on experience of prototyping or NPI of at least one MEMS packaging technology with one or more integrated circuit technologies;
  • Track record of successful grant proposal writing; 
  • In-depth knowledge (Research landscape, Technology Roadmaps, Regulations and Policy implementation) in one or more Key Enabling Technologies;
  • Experience with EU funding, R&D program management, project management and/or product development.

Appointment, dependent upon skills and experience, may be made on the Grade 6 (€50,042 - €59,746) or Grade 6a (€59,828 - €75,527) salary scale. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
