Contract Type: Full Time/Fixed Term (12 months)

The Wireless Communications Laboratory at Tyndall National Institute in Dublin is advertising for the position of a Senior Researcher in AI techniques for wireless communications/UAV networks within the SFI Defence Challenge MISTRAL project, and reporting to Dr Lester Ho. The successful candidate will develop AI-driven planning and control systems for autonomous UAVs that are deployed to provide wireless communications coverage and sensing capabilities for a wide array of applications including peacekeeping, search and rescue and disaster management.

The post offers a superb opportunity for an ambitious individual to work collaboratively on exciting, cutting-edge science at the interface between academia and industry and across multiple teams.

Tyndall’s Wireless Communications Laboratory intends to grow to 50+ researchers based in Dublin by 2025. As part of this it is expected that follow-up opportunities within the lab will be available after the successful completion of the MISTRAL project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create UAV flight optimisation algorithms to create and maintain an airborne network to provide wireless communications coverage to critical end-users on the ground.
  • Develop and validate AI-based predictors to provide accurate estimates of radio propagation conditions based on real-time measurements and terrain data.
  • Support the implementation and testing of the developed algorithms in real-world drone flight control systems.
  • Disseminate research achievements through publications in leading journals and at leading conferences.
  • Participate in developing future research initiatives within the group
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post. 

Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Wireless Communications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Typically 5+ years of post-doctoral research experience in the field of machine learning and optimisation techniques.
  • Ability to proactively contribute to multi-disciplinary teams from academia, industry and defence organisations.
  • Strong publication record in IEEE or ACM journals and conference publications.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the field of wireless communications and UAVs are highly desired.
  • Demonstration of experience with developing and implementing ML techniques in real-world systems, particularly for prediction and real-time optimisation of autonomous systems.
  • Good mathematical skills and knowledge of mathematical modelling tools such as Julia/ Python/MATLAB.
  • Ability to engage in the wider research activities of the research group.

Appointment will be on the Grade 6a Admin II Scale (B) €66,055 to €83,672 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
