PSMY-5 Technology Business Development Executive

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

This is an exciting, client-facing role which will suit an experienced business development executive, a technical sales executive or sales engineer wishing to expand their career horizon in the specialist field of deep tech science and engineering business development with a rapidly-expanding, global research institute.

Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems, specialising in both micro/nano electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems. Central to our national role is delivering economic impact through research excellence. As partners to industry and academia we work to transform research into commercialisable technology platforms in our core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-food, the environment and advanced manufacturing.

Tyndall is a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural institution with over 50 nationalities representing a wide range of disciplines from science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to technology commercialisation, project management, financial management, HR, marketing/communications and facilities management.

Working with our research centre teams, Tyndall’s commercial team is responsible for all aspects of industry engagement across a wide range of deep technology research programmes and service delivery to our network of SME and MNC industry partners across the globe.

In line with our growth strategy, #Tyndall 2025, we have created the new role of Technology Business Development Executive, reporting to the Commercial Director or their nominee.

As a key member of the business development team, the Technology BD Executive will identify, negotiate and execute research and service engagements with industry partners across the diverse range of world-leading deep tech research in Tyndall’s research centres.

Location: Cork or Dublin office, moderate national and international travel.

Key Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage your assigned pipeline of commercial contracts with responsibility for contract terms development and negotiation to close.
  • Achieve your contract targets in line with management and the Institute’s strategic objectives.
  • Agree and secure optimum commercial, legal and intellectual property terms with internal Tyndall and UCC finance, operations, legal and technology transfer teams.
  • Working proactively with industry partner personnel and Tyndall’s research community, capture and communicate industry needs statements to develop a pipeline of new research topics and services.
  • Author proposals for industry research and service engagements, aligning complex research problem statements with appropriate commercial models and contract terms.
  • Build industry consortia for Tyndall research programmes especially in the context of EI, SFI and EU funded research initiatives.
  • Prepare and deliver technology and commercial presentations, promoting the Institute’s research capabilities and infrastructure to industry partners.
  • Work closely with National public bodies such as Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Science Foundation Ireland and the EU to build links with industry.
  • Assist other BD and industry partner relationship personnel in the development and conclusion of commercial contracts as may be required from time to time.
  • Support Tyndall’s research centres’ industry engagement strategy, including the research teams’ objectives for industry partner engagement and development of commercialisation opportunities for their research.
  • Contribute to Tyndall marketing initiatives including digital channels and marketing collateral, conference and events planning and attendance.
  • Other and evolving duties in the Commercial Centre which enable, deliver and improve the Institute’s commercial performance, aligning with its evolving objectives and maximising impact delivered for our industry partners, research teams and stakeholders.

Essential Criteria

  • Proof of primary Degree in engineering or science disciplines
  • Typically 5+ years’ B2B industry experience with primary responsibility for transaction completion in sales, business development or applications engineering in support of sales
  • Demonstrable track record of success in a target-driven, results-oriented approach to client engagement
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Semiconductor materials & devices, electronic engineering, chemical engineering or chemistry qualification and experience
  • Experience working at the academic – industry interface, with a strong focus on research and development
  • Track record of establishing collaborative projects.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the fields of material science, nanotechnology or bioengineering as applied to the ICT, medical technology, manufacturing and/or biopharma sectors, or at the convergence of these disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of state, EU supports and other funding opportunities.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms such as Salesforce
  • A passion for deep technology and its potential for societal and economic impact
  • Demonstrated experience of working in a multi-faceted team environment and will work well under pressure and have the ability to work on their own initiative
  • Marketing and market research experience in a technology domain
  • A large network of contacts in the relevant industrial sectors, including semiconductors, medical technologies and advanced manufacturing
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple projects simultaneously

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 (Admin III) salary scale - € 51,553 to € 61,551 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
