Job Description

Reporting to the Head of the Photonics Centre at Tyndall, you will establish and spearhead the Quantum Photonic Integration Group at Tyndall National Institute in accordance with the Institute’s strategic growth plan, ‘Tyndall 2025’, which aims to double Tyndall’s size and impact over the next five years. Photonics research and innovation will be a significant driver of this expansion, and includes a major focus on photonic integration for multiple applications including for future quantum information processing and communication systems.  As the Head of Quantum Photonic Integration at Tyndall you will be an internationally recognised leader in your field as evidenced by prestigious invited conference speaker engagements and well cited impactful publications. You will have a sustained or growing record of successful bids for high value competitive national and international grants and awards. In addition, you will have experience of managing a research team including staff and postgraduate students.

As a research manager within Tyndall you will have specific responsibility for spearheading the Institute’s Quantum Photonic Integration initiative as well as being a key contributor to Tyndall’s wider Quantum Engineering programme. Tyndall’s research activities span from atoms to systems with multidisciplinary teams and collaborations spanning Micro & Nano Systems, Photonics, Systems Integration and Packaging, Quantum Engineering and Energy. You will be pivotal in fostering and developing deep, cross-Tyndall collaborations, as well as nationally through SFI research centres such as IPIC, and internationally through programmes such as the Horizon Europe funding framework. In addition, you will be encouraged and supported to pursue the exploitation of your ideas with industry and/or through the development of new start-up ventures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a credible and ambitious strategic research vision for Quantum Photonic Integration within Tyndall that leverages the unique infrastructure, capabilities and full range of expertise of the Institute.
  • Establish and grow the Quantum Photonic Integration Group and through your management develop its reputation as a world beating research group in the field.
  • Ensure the production of excellent research outcomes as evidenced by influential or milestone publications in pre-eminent journals and conferences.
  •  Attract, retain and manage high calibre talent including research staff and post-graduate students, and grow and develop researchers of all levels within Tyndall, providing leadership, management, coaching, and mentoring as required.
  • Create a team culture that results in high quality postgraduate training and supervision and where professional / personal / career development is a priority.
  • Manage and/or supervise others in successful bids for competitive large scale (million €) grants/awards from national and European funding sources, and Industry.
  • Ensure that the team develop breakthrough technologies in Quantum Photonic Integration, resulting in new ideas and solutions that generate societal and economic impact and benefit.
  • Ensure that the team develop novel intellectual property and impactful innovations and support their commercialisation through high value start-ups or through licencing to industry.
  • Ensure that the Group enjoys strong partnerships and collaborations across Tyndall’s other research groups and within the SFI IPIC centre.
  • Promote Tyndall, the Quantum Photonic Integration Group and IPIC within the international research community and nationally across wider society.
  • Ensure high levels of Education and Public Engagement (EPE) activity across the Quantum Photonic Integration Group in coordination with the wider education and public engagement programmes within Tyndall and IPIC.
  • As a senior research manager within Tyndall ensure the delivery of the Tyndall 2025 strategic plan, leading and participating in strategic actions or working groups as requested by the CEO or nominee
  • Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Health and Safety standards and with Tyndall’s Quality Management System with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • A PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a closely related topic.
  • An excellent and growing international research profile as evidenced by invited talks and publications, awards or prizes, patents or other outputs relating to quantum photonic integration or a closely related area.
  • Experience in creating and developing world-class international research teams in an academic or industrial research environment or setting.
  • Leadership of successful funding applications for substantial research projects funded by national and international agencies and/or industry.
  • A proven or growing track record of managing, inspiring and mentoring early career staff or students resulting in the development of a pipeline of early research experts from within their research group.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as taking a managerial role.
  • A growing track record and/or evidence of commitment to innovation and commercialisation of IP, for example by patent portfolio development, licensing wins or other successful technology transfer to industry.
  • Direct experience of postgraduate supervision and mentoring up to PhD level.
  • Strong personal vision and ambition.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.

Appointment may be made on the Grade 8 (Snr Admin IV) Scale B range €82,984 - €99,219 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
