Biography
Simon is Senior Researcher in the Biophotonics group at Tyndall. His work focuses on the translation of biophotonics research into novel and impactful tools for clinicians and the medical device industry. His key research interests are in the areas of image-guided sensing and navigation using micro-camera technology, novel laser and diode sources, and fibre-optic sensors for spectroscopy applications.
Simon has been working with applied optics and photonics in a mixed academic and industrial setting for over 10 years. He has a broad range of experience with research, prototyping and translation of novel optical technologies, in particular laser sources and sensing systems.
Simon received a BSc in Physics from Aarhus University in 2007, and his MSc and PhD degrees from the Technical University of Denmark in 2010 and 2013, respectively. His PhD work focused on developing ultra-stable supercontinuum light sources and was undertaken in close collaboration with NKT Photonics. After graduating, Simon continued at NKT Photonics as a Product Development Engineer in the R&D group. In 2014 Simon joined the newly opened Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics in Glasgow, where he helped deliver photonics-based prototypes for sensing applications on multiple industry facing projects. Simon has been with the biophotonics group at Tyndall since the beginning of 2019.
