BioPhotonics at Tyndall - Meet Michael

Name: Dr Michael Raju

Why did you choose Tyndall National Institute over other research institutes to complete your postgraduate studies?

The BioPhotonics group at Tyndall provided me with the opportunity to pursue modelling studies in a niche research field that I am interested in. There are a limited number of research groups in the world that provide funding opportunities to study theoretical and modelling research on fundamental topics that I am passionate about.

What have you enjoyed most about your postgraduate studies thus far?

I particularly appreciate the relatively low-stress work culture as well as the encouragement of creative thinking and sustainability in research. Also, I am lucky to be part of a great team which supports the holistic well-being of its members.

How has your supervisor impacted your education?

Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels is a great supervisor and has always been available and approachable in person for open discussions and learnings. I extend my thanks to him for giving me the academic freedom to pursue the means to achieve the intended research goals. His enthusiasm to maintain a great team spirit and his scientific inquisitiveness in organising various brainstorming sessions, have helped me to sustain my morale during the PhD years. The way in which he prioritises the academic, emotional, and physical well-being of his team has benefitted me on a personal level.

Have any of your colleagues changed the way you view the world and how you want to progress your career?

Prof. Stefan and his team continuously inspire me to be both positive and ambitious in my pursuit of an academic career in research

What is your most memorable experience so far at Tyndall?

My most memorable experience of Tyndall to date is my successful PhD defence and associated celebrations. It is an honour and a privilege to be part of the Tyndall Institute and to complete my PhD studies here.

Aside from your studies what have you learned from your Tyndall experience? And how have your extracurricular activities contributed to your growth and development?

In addition to facilitating research, the opportunities provided by Tyndall for personal and career development, professional networking and general well-being have been productive.
