Research meets Creativity through Tyndall’s Early Career Researchers’ Network

Tyndall Early Career Researchers’ Network (TEC-Net), a network that provides support and advice to early-career researchers at Tyndall National Institute, based at University College Cork, recently organised a tour and workshop at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork city.

A group of postgraduate students and staff from Tyndall had the chance to step out of their office and labs, and into the Crawford Art Gallery. The group had a guided tour of the gallery, followed by a workshop that allowed the participants to create their own art using techniques such as etching and ink printing.

The participants immersed themselves in the intricate art of etching, inspired by the artist Harry Clarke's iconic works showcased in "HARRY CLARKE: Bad Romance."

Attendees explored the nuances of etching as they translated their artistic visions onto paper, guided by craft experts. From intricate line work to delicate shading, participants had the opportunity to experiment and hone their skills. TEC-Net is proud to support initiatives that celebrate Irish art and foster creativity within the Tyndall community.

One of the workshop attendees, Dr Liudmila Khokhlova said:

“Understanding the art techniques provided a unique perspective on the possibilities for adapting them in my research area, specifically smart textiles. The hands-on master class allowed us to delve deeper into the process and sparked creativity among participants.”

This was the final TEC-Net event chaired by Sofia Teixeira, who reflects with pride on her accomplishments and contributions over the past four years to the TEC-Net committee.

Extending her best wishes to the incoming chair and expressing hope for their success in leading TEC-Net forward, Sofia said:

“It has truly been an incredible pleasure to be a part of this committee since its inception as a co-founder. Witnessing its growth from day one and reflecting on how far we've come, along with the achievements we've made for early career researchers, has been immensely rewarding.”
