Simone Dulfer shares her experience of the Meta project at Tyndall

Tell us about yourself:

I am a master's Student in Electrical Engineering at the University of Twente, in the Netherlands, specialising in Semiconductor Devices & Technology. Figuring out how things work on a detailed level amazes me and I am interested in not only electronics but also physics and chemistry. In my free time, I like to go out exploring in nature with friends, go for a run, or do some yoga/reading/crochet.

Tell us about your role at Tyndall?

I am doing an internship at the Nano electronic Materials and Devices Group in Tyndall, as a part of my masters. My internship is part of a larger project with Meta, led by Prof. Paul Hurley, Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Nanoelectronic Materials and Devices Research Group   on the efficiency of the scalability of micro-LEDs. I am mostly doing measurements characterising devices and interfaces related to this topic. Combining these measurements with simulations helps to gain a deeper understanding of the system, enabling technology improvements.

What motivated you to apply for an internship with Tyndall?

I wanted to do an internship very much related to my specialisation in semiconductor devices & technology and get a good taste of what is currently happening in research and industry. Tyndall is renowned for its research excellence in micro and nanoscale electronics, so I am very glad a professor from my home university suggested that I go here. The beautiful countryside and nice city of Cork have been a great bonus!

What surprised you the most about your internship?

Above all else, I was delighted to meet the Tánaiste (vice prime minister of Ireland) at University College Cork for the press release of a project I am working on. As well as this, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of projects in Tyndall that interest me, presenting me with a wider variety of options for the future that I wasn’t aware existed before coming here.

How did you develop personally and professionally during the internship?

During my internship, I have developed a lot of relevant knowledge about device properties and the characterisation methods I have used. In addition, I learned more about how an institute such as Tyndall and affiliated companies operate and about the importance of collaboration. Personally, it has been a great experience living in Cork for the past three months, experiencing all its fun, its kind people and the beautiful countryside surrounding it.

Do you have any advice for future interns?

For future interns, I would say just go for it and enjoy all that Tyndall has to give. Network and chat to lots of people here as they are all working on magnificent things that might be of interest to you as well.
